Three Day Reflection Word on the Week 20th June 2026.
There was not much doubt regarding the way our leaders would vote; they were falling over themselves to make themselves clear. After all it was a free vote and that included them. Go with your conscience was the theory. Follow the leader was the implication!
The subject before the Dáil was the deletion of the mandatory three-day period for reflection before abortion takes place. This measure was introduced eight years ago in order to make the Bill palatable for the anti-abortionists. It was passed and now the legislation eight years on was felt to be able to do without this prop. This in spite of increasing abortion figures.
In the chaotic world we live in there are few ready-made times for reflection. The three-day wait staked out a period in which you could reach a firm conclusion. The gravity of the situation could be brought home, that a human life is in the mother’s hands. Truly a matter of life or death.
For those who have not availed of the period of reflection, but wish they had, the ‘abortion regrets’ people are able to offer comfort.
Interestingly no statistics have been made available of the number of mothers who availed of this lifeline for the child. It would have been useful to have heard some of their stories.
One would wonder what the back story is? The motivation seems to be politically inspired and in the face of a dropping birth rate. A case of cutting off your nose despite your face! Scripture is plain that children are a gift from the Lord – Psalm 127 verses 3/5.
For those who regard abortion as delayed contraception they should be aware they are destroying an embryo human life made in the image of his creator. Scripture recognises from conception there is another human waiting in the wings.
The psalmist (king David) ‘I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. My frame was not hid from you when I was made in the secret place’ (Psalm 139 verses 13 to 16).
Those who pray should do so as this decision can be reversed.
