Take Mr Donaldson Down Word on the Week 27th June 2o26.
Those words uttered by the Judge in the Donaldson trial heralded the end of the proceedings. The prisoner, now found guilty, was literally taken down by the police to the cells below the Courtroom. There he would remain until an appropriate sentence was decided upon.
What marks Donaldson out from any other paedophile was his position in the Society of Northern Ireland. He was a church man in good standing in his denomination. He had recently risen the become leader of the Political party known as the DUP. His name had become a household word.
His wife was his accomplice in his evil practices and although she has a mental condition which rendered her unfit to stand trial she was judged to be guilty and will be sentenced in due course.
One feature of the trial was the continuous flow of accusations of lying uttered by Donaldson against the women he had wronged. It reached something of a climax when the Judge broke silence and said “It’s you who is Lying Mr Donaldson”.
Another feature was the total absence of any acknowledgement of guilt. The normal thing for the Christian would be to own up when the Court uncovered the truth. Indeed, some sort of confession might just have saved the women their ordeal in the witness box. The only indication of remorse was the recent handing back his Knighthood to the Crown.
The wearing of the Christian ‘Fish’ symbol in his lapel throughout the trial added insult to injury. It has a noble origin. The Christian Fish symbol (Ichthus) originated in the early Church as a secret acronym and covert identifier for persecuted believers in the Roman Empire.
Today it is used mainly as a conversation starter to lead the discussion down useful paths. In Donaldson’s case it seemed to be used to advertising his Christian credentials - a sad misuse of the badge.
With the absence of repentance and continuing as before, Scripture calls it "Trampling underfoot the blood of Christ" (Hebrews 10 verse 29). It describes the spiritual offense of deliberately rejecting the sacrifice of Jesus (for forgiveness) and treating His sacred covenant as something worthless.
Donaldson knows the truth of this Chorus. Indeed, he may have sung it. There is a way back to God from the dark paths of sin; There is a door that is open and you may go in. At Calvary’s cross is where you begin, when you come as a sinner to Jesus.
