Summary
Arrivals Word on the Week 25th April 2026
The rhythms of life that are built into creation produce for us a cherished diversity. This week we welcomed the Bluebell blooming in the wooded places and some of the hedgerows. Above our heads came the first of the Swallows and we have also to record a first – the visit of a Cabinet Minister to our Men’s Shed!
The Bluebell or Wild Hyacinth grow well in shady places. Picking the flowers does not damage the plant but avoid walking on the leaves, which lie horizontal on the ground, as they contain the plants food supply.
The rich blue of the majority gives the plant its name. There are usually a few pink blooms and occasionally a patch of Bluebells will produce a white variety. The plant has a lovely scent. It flowers from April to June.
Some may remember the Children’s song ‘In and out the dusky Bluebells X3 Who will be my master’. It has probably slipped from living memory like other singing communal games ousted by technology!
The Swallow is also a wonder of creation. It winters in Sub-Saharan Africa and finds its way back to the nest from which it was reared! They fraternise with House Martins which also resemble the Swallow when in flight.
One major thing that differentiates the one from the other is the nest. Both are made by the bird sculpting in wet mud. In the case of the Swallow it is cup-shaped and on the rafters inside the building. Whereas the Martin builds outside and under the eaves in a conical shape with a small hole for access.
The planned visit of the Cabinet Minister, James Lawless, to the handful of men gathered in the Men’s Shed in Kill this week was a great success. The Shed is in his constituency and his arrival, if not the first TD, was certainly the first of ministerial status.
We appreciated his willingness to answer questions, tackle problems and play Pool! This also may become an annual event!
What is a present event for believers is the Apostle Paul’s view expressed in Romans 8 verse 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. And that arrival for the believer will remain.
