Independence Day USA Word on the Week 4th July 2026.
The 4th of July was when 13 States threw off the shackles of British rule and declared independence. It was based on the noble values of individualism, equal opportunity, self-reliance, and the pursuit of happiness.
Over the 250 years these values have gotten somewhat scrambled but the original freedom concept not even Trump has been able to destroy! Governance, in recent times has shifted somewhat causing one of our cartoonists to confirm the US’s 248 years of democracy! The last two years being Trump’s autocracy!
No American President has worked harder to make a name for himself. Many times his plans for self advancement have been presented as what was best for America. He and his family have probably made more money for themselves than all the other Presidents put together!
By a happy coincidence this celebration is taking place whilst the US is hosting the World Cup soccer tournament. It is a testament to the organisation abilities of the country that the competition has gone smoothly. It’s a country where Soccer would not be anything like it’s premier sport and yet stadiums have been adapted to cope with the 100 plus matches of the tournament.
It also has brought out the best in the country’s ability to cater for many supporters from the plethora of nations competing. Whatever immigrant problems America has with other nations has not been evident in crowds from the various countries that, along with locals, fill the stadiums.
All this is a far cry from the scene in the early 1600’s when the Mayflower sailed for the Americas with a cargo of Christians fleeing persecution in the UK. They landed in Massachusetts where they established a government based on majority consent of the governed rather than royal degree.
They believed that the strict, ornate rituals and rigid hierarchies of the Catholic and English state churches strayed from the teachings of the Bible. They favoured a return to simple, early Christian living based on Scripture and formed churches and schools biased on their beliefs.
They believed in a direct, personal relationship with God through conversion to Christ and related to one another, viewing their community and actions as directly guided by divine will. Their faith spread to the founding Fathers who caught the idea of humans being of infinite worth (Matthew 16 verses24 to 28).
Let’s celebrate all God’s good gifts that mark out the USA!
